One Strong Brand, Two Great New Wine Names

« back to overview

MonteKristo Vineyards is Malta’s latest and most exciting addition to the local wine-making scene. On Thursday 8 November 2007, MonteKristo Vineyards expanded its range of wines with the Falcon Ridge label and a Novello, which together represent the care and attention that has gone into selecting vine types that produce wines of perfection in harmony with Malta’s unique terroir. The launch was mainly attended by owners of restaurants, hotels and wine bars and took place at the Montekristo Vaults.

Montekristo’s team of international oenologists, headed up by Italian winemaker Luca Patricelli, understands the Maltese terroir perfectly and has promoted and cultivated vine types that respect Malta’s indigenous characteristics. The depth and quality of the latest labels are testament to MonteKristo’s determination and professionalism in pioneering local grape production.

The Falcon Ridge 2006 label is characterised by highly-prized, international vine types - Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which together offer a comprehensive range under the label. These wines are noted for their finesse and their respective, pleasing bouquets and they come together here in perfect union with the characteristics of the Maltese terroir. These are authentic wines produced from MonteKristo’s state-of-the-art winery but with a method that respects the special characteristics of these continental grapes produced on our Islands. These are wines which can be enjoyed throughout the seasons, including peak summer, and are an excellent accompaniment to our local cuisine; they are wines which talk of our land and culture.

One of MonteKristo’s most noted additions this autumn is the Novello, the first and only Maltese wine produced from locally-grown grapes which have been harvested by hand and then vinified with 100% carbonic maceration (a partial malolactic fermentation was completed at 24º C). It is also the first wine in Malta to be classified IĠT (Indikazzjoni Ġeografica Tipika). To produce this wine, the grapes are harvested and, without being crushed, are left to ferment for 25 days or more. This helps the wine develop its characteristic aromas and bouquet. After this, the grapes then ferment until they have produced the wine which is bottled within just a few days in order to preserve its distinct Novello attributes. The Novello embodies the colour and intensity that distinguish our Islands. It has a ruby red hue and an aroma ranging from forest fruits to black cherries and a bouquet slightly verging on the sweet and with floral notes but with a rich, robust palate and a pleasing finish. The MonteKristo Novello is a suitable accompaniment to our local cuisine or fresh cheeses and appetizers.

The common denominator among all these wines? The MonteKristo brand, which is producing wines of distinction that are unique to our country at this southernmost tip of Europe, and are certainly to its credit.
